The neighborhoods of Federal Hill, Federal Hill South and Riverside make up what many residents typically refer to as Federal Hill. With some buildings and residences on the historic registry, Federal Hill is an exciting community that works hard to preserve its past and individuality while still offering a taste of urban living in a traditional neighborhood setting. Rich in history, this neighborhood´s name dates back to the late 18th century during a celebration at the top of the hill following Maryland´s ratification of the U.S. Constitution.

Since its establishment, Federal Hill´s location has always been a chief feature with its great views of the Inner Harbor and the city of Baltimore. For many years, the hill served as an observation point for incoming shipping vessels from which merchants and ship owners were notified of a pending arrival. Federal Hill also played many other important roles throughout history, including the spot where Major General Samuel Smith organized his troops so that they could defeat the British attack on Baltimore during the War of 1812. A monument honoring General Smith, who also served as mayor for some time, now stands in Federal Hill Park.

Today, residents can visit the top of Federal Hill to stand where past heroes once stood, as well as take in great scenery on a daily basis. Positioned within walking distance of most downtown businesses, the ballpark at Camden Yards, the Ravens´ stadium, and public transportation including the MARC rail line to Washington and the Light Rail station, Federal Hill is the perfect setting in which to reside. Also nearby are schools, churches, health clubs, a post office, swimming pools and much more.

Federal Hill offers a very social environment blended with historic ambiance and easy access to Baltimore City and the Inner Harbor. Like any close-knit community, this neighborhood celebrates its social life through its recreational amenities and festivals. As one of Baltimore´s major landmarks, the Federal Hill Park welcomes anyone and everyone and has a playground for the little ones. Riverside Park is another favorite for Federal Hill residents, as it offers athletic fields, lots of open space, and even free concerts in the summertime. Another neighborhood attraction is the city-owned Cross Street Market, where vendors offer anything you could want from a variety of prepared foods to jewelry and clothing. After the Cross Street Market closes down for the day, you can find Federal Hill residents socializing in the many taverns, pubs and restaurants along Cross, Charles, and Light Streets where they can take in good food and live music. Favorite events include the lively Street Beat Festival, which celebrates city life, Shakespeare on the Hill, which is a series of theater performances, the Jazz & Blues Festival, and a Spring Block Party.

Reborn in the 1960s, modern Federal Hill homes were renovated up until the mid-60s when the Baltimore area was threatened by a plan to construct a complex highway system that would have destroyed the Inner Harbor and the surrounding neighborhoods. Joining hands across the harbor, the residents rebelled and defeated the plan. Today, Federal Hill is an intimate residential district that is located within walking distance of downtown and the Harborplace pavilions in the Inner Harbor.

The Federal Hill real estate market offers many housing options for its residents. Residential real estate in Federal Hill consists primarily of two and three-story brick row homes built in the late 19th century. Many of these row homes have been renovated to meet today´s standard of living while preserving the charm and characteristics of the old Baltimore row homes. It´s these renovated row homes along with the new townhomes, condominiums and apartments combined with the neighborhood´s convenient location and the welcoming residents that make this one of the city´s most desirable places to live.
